MOT Test Frequently Asked Questions
These are the questions and answers relating to having an MOT test that we most frequently get asked here at Warwick’s only AA Approved MOT Test Centre.
Does my MOT test have to be done on the day it expires?
No. It can be carried out up to a month minus a day before the expiry date shown on your MOT test certificate and still retain the same expiry date next year. It’s like paying for 12 months and getting 13! Happy days!
When is my MOT is due?
Your MOT Test pass certificate will show you when your MOT is due to expire. If you don’t have the certificate use the DVSA’s free online tool showing MOT status, expiry date and safety recall history here – https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-status. Why not register your vehicle with us for free and we’ll send you a reminder text and/or email nearer the date with a direct link to make booking your MOT test even easier.
How much does an MOT cost?
The DVSA set a maximum price any garage can charge for Class 4 (car) MOT, currently £54.85.
Some garages, like Just Nice Clean Cars in Warwick, charge far less, with our MOT test costing just £39 and we often run special deals too.
Today (23.1.25), if you have a full or major service carried out at the same time, the MOT test will only cost you £29, saving you £10 off our normal price. (Please check offer is still valid at time of booking as it is only available for a limited period).
How long does the MOT test take?
Allow 45-60 minutes. You will usually be given a specific test appointment time telling you when your MOT test will be carried out. If you arrive late, the garage may not be able to carry out the test for you later that day as all other test appointments could be full. It’s always best to arrive 10 minutes beforehand.
Can anyone carry out an MOT?
No. Only at an accredited MOT testing station can carry out an MOT and this must be done by a qualified MOT tester. Both must be regularly checked and certified. ‘Looking for an MOT Test centre near me’ can bring up lots of results, so check out if it is registered on the government website here: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/active-mot-test-stations
What does the MOT cover?
The mechanical and electrical operation of your car to ensure it meets certain safety standards set by the DVSA.
What are the main reasons a car can fail?
1. Mis-aligned headlights
2. Tyre tread depth below 1.6mm
3. Wiper blades not clearing the windscreen
Can I drive a car without an MOT?
No. An MOT is a legal requirement and driving without one can incur a £1,000 fine. Exceptions are driving the car to a pre-booked MOT test appointment or repair, or the vehicle is exempt.
